The SPECTRUM motion control system Spectrum FO™ is a truly “distributed” neural control system. All remote control modules, or remote nodes, carry their own embedded computers, providing local “intelligence” and the off-loading (and faster processing) of time-critical control, sensing and monitoring tasks from the Core Controller. All components of the distributed system are connected via fiber-optic Ethernet communication links. Servo loops are controlled digitally and closed locally by the individual nodes, allowing servo loop performance gains that would not be possible with traditional linear PID analog servo loops. Since digital fiber-optic communication is employed between the core components, most of the system inter-connection wiring [hence weight and cable installation cost] is significantly reduced when compared to earlier generations systems. Spectrum’s fiber-optic interconnection scheme also minimizes the EMI and ground loop problems that plague traditional systems, particularly those installed in composite-hulled vessels or on military vessels with high-power RF environments.
